I am fascinated by the story of the Roman Emperor Caracalla. His name comes from the red cloak that he wore, and he was the first to grant citizenship to everyone in the Roman Empire, but this was more out of a need for more taxes than any kind of magnanimity. He ruled jointly with his slower brother Geta, and caracalla murdered him so that he alone could be Emperor.

He was murdered by one of his own soldiers while taking a piss by the side of the road.
